Mount Allison University has provided us with the following information regarding their homeschool admissions.
Knowing costs are rising for NB families across the board, we are also willing to provide application fee waivers for interested students to allow them to submit applications free of charge. Our Winter 2025 Application Form is currently available for January intake. As of October 1st 2024, our new application for the Fall 2025 Term will launch. Interested applicants may use the following promocode to waive the fee: HENB25
As a general overview of our approach to admissions for homeschooled applicants, the following should provide families with a guide:
For admissions purposes, we typically look at grade 11 and grade 12. For many of our home schooled students this is a mix of records from both the public system and their home school program. The best advice to home schooled students is that they apply as early in the process as they feel comfortable. This allows us the time to request additional information on the home school program they are following, if we require it. Home schooled students qualify for the same scholarships as students applying from high school, typically in the range of $1000-$5000 renewable, though also eligible for major scholarship and award consideration above $5000 per year.
The deadline for scholarships is usually March 1, so I encourage students to consider applying by early February at the latest so we can make sure we have everything we need in time to make sure they are considered for those awards. All information on applying found at www.mta.ca/apply [1]
If a student is using a third party (correspondence or online) program, then we require a transcript from the issuing institution as well as information on the curriculum followed (often this is available via the web). If a student is following an independent home school program, but with traditional grading scheme, we require a record of grades, as well as some information on the curriculum/course outcomes/textbooks used.
For non-traditional curriculums or grading schemes, we would like to see as much information as is available with regard to course curriculum/content and would typically want to see some form of third party assessment to allow us to assess the student for admission and scholarships (SAT, ACT, GED, individual course(s) from a recognized provider or public system, etc).
As with our students applying to Mount Allison from High School, home schooled students will require a grade 12 equivalent English language arts course (with a literary analysis component). Usually we look for at least 4 other grade 12 level academic courses (or equivalent), and if applying to the Bachelor of Science program a pre-calculus level mathematics course will be required and senior level science courses are strongly recommended.
